The nitrogen cycle is the foundation of every healthy aquarium, and it is especially important for shrimp. Without a completed cycle, shrimp will not survive. When food, plant debris, or waste breaks down in an aquarium, it produces ammonia. Ammonia is extremely toxic to shrimp, even at very low levels. In a cycled aquarium, beneficial bacteria convert ammonia into nitrite. Nitrite is also toxic, but a second group of bacteria then converts nitrite into nitrate.
