DAY 6 – Ideal Water Parameters for Neocaridina Shrimp (Why Stability Matters Most)

Water parameters are one of the most discussed topics in shrimp keeping, yet many beginners focus on the wrong aspect. While Neocaridina shrimp have preferred ranges, stability is far more important than exact values.

Neocaridina shrimp thrive in temperatures between 68–74°F. Cooler temperatures slow metabolism and breeding, while higher temperatures increase activity but shorten lifespan. Consistency within this range reduces stress.

The ideal pH range for Neocaridina shrimp is 6.5–7.5. They tolerate slight variations, but sudden pH swings can lead to failed molts and deaths. Using inert substrates and avoiding chemical pH adjusters helps maintain stability.

GH, or general hardness, supplies minerals shrimp need for molting. A GH range of 6–8 is ideal. KH, or carbonate hardness, helps buffer pH and should remain between 2–4. Extremely low or high values can interfere with molting and overall health.

Ammonia and nitrite must always be at zero. Even trace amounts are toxic to shrimp. Nitrate should be kept under 20 ppm through regular, gentle water changes and plant growth.

Water changes should be small and consistent. Replacing 10–20% of the water weekly is far safer than infrequent large changes. New water should be close in temperature and parameters to the tank water.

Shrimp respond best to predictability. When water parameters remain stable over time, shrimp become more active, breed more reliably, and live longer.
