What Are Neocaridina Shrimp?
Neocaridina shrimp (commonly called Neocaridina davidi) are freshwater dwarf shrimp known for their hardiness, bright colors, and suitability for beginners. Popular varieties include Blue Dream, Cherry Red, Yellow, Orange, and more.
They are excellent algae grazers, peaceful tank inhabitants, and rewarding to breed when kept in proper conditions.
Step 1: Understanding Their Basic Needs
Before buying shrimp or equipment, you must understand what Neocaridina shrimp need to survive and thrive:
1. Stable Water Parameters
Neocaridina shrimp tolerate a wide range of conditions, but stability is more important than perfection.
Recommended ranges:

Temperature: 68–74°F (20–23°C)

pH: 6.5–7.5

GH: 6–8

KH: 2–4

Ammonia & Nitrite: 0 ppm (always)

Nitrate: under 20 ppm
Sudden changes are far more dangerous than slightly imperfect values.
2. A Cycled Aquarium (Non‑Negotiable)
Shrimp must never be added to an uncycled tank.
A cycled aquarium has established beneficial bacteria that convert toxic ammonia into safer compounds. Without this, shrimp will die — often within days.
Cycling typically takes 4–6 weeks.

3. Proper Substrate
Neocaridina shrimp do best on:
