Shrimp tanks do not require complicated or expensive equipment. In fact, simplicity is often the key to success. Neocaridina shrimp thrive in calm, stable environments with gentle water movement and consistent temperatures.
Filtration is essential, but not all filters are shrimp-safe. Sponge filters are the most recommended option for shrimp tanks. They provide gentle filtration, house beneficial bacteria, and prevent shrimp or baby shrimp from being sucked into the filter. Sponge filters also trap food particles that shrimp can graze on throughout the day.
Heaters may or may not be necessary depending on room temperature. Neocaridina shrimp are comfortable between 68–74°F. If room temperatures remain stable within this range, a heater is optional. If a heater is used, it should be adjustable and reliable to prevent overheating.
Lighting should be chosen with plants in mind rather than shrimp. Simple LED aquarium lighting is sufficient for low-light plants such as guppy grass. Excessively strong lighting can cause algae issues without providing benefits to shrimp.
Air pumps are commonly used with sponge filters and help maintain oxygen levels. Gentle airflow is preferred, as strong currents can stress shrimp.
Many products marketed for aquariums are unnecessary for shrimp tanks. CO₂ systems, chemical additives, and strong power filters often create instability rather than improvement. Shrimp benefit most from consistent conditions, not constant adjustments.
By focusing on simple, shrimp-safe equipment, keepers can maintain a healthy tank with minimal intervention.
