The nitrogen cycle is the foundation of every healthy aquarium, and it is especially important for shrimp. Without a completed cycle, shrimp will not survive.
When food, plant debris, or waste breaks down in an aquarium, it produces ammonia. Ammonia is extremely toxic to shrimp, even at very low levels. In a cycled aquarium, beneficial bacteria convert ammonia into nitrite. Nitrite is also toxic, but a second group of bacteria then converts nitrite into nitrate. Nitrate is much less harmful and can be controlled through water changes and plant growth.
Cycling a tank means allowing these beneficial bacteria to establish before adding livestock. This process typically takes four to six weeks. During this time, ammonia will rise, followed by nitrite, and finally nitrate. Shrimp should only be added once ammonia and nitrite consistently test at zero.
Adding shrimp to an uncycled tank almost always results in losses. Even if the water looks clean, invisible toxins can build up rapidly. Patience during the cycling process prevents unnecessary deaths.
Feeding small amounts of shrimp food during cycling can help introduce organic matter for bacteria to process. Live plants and substrate also provide surfaces where beneficial bacteria can grow.
Once the nitrogen cycle is established, it becomes the biological filter that keeps shrimp safe. Maintaining the cycle through gentle cleaning, controlled feeding, and avoiding harsh chemicals is key to long-term success.
